Mega Man: Dual Override

The 12th classic Mega Man - two Robot Hunters, a robot exhibition gone wrong, and a power system built to break its own limits.

Mega Man: Dual Override is Capcom's 12th mainline entry in the original Mega Man series, announced at The Game Awards on December 11, 2025 and set for Spring 2027. This wiki covers the Override power system, the Custom Chip loadout system, the eight new Robot Masters, Proto Man as a fully playable second character, and the three-Area stage structure that breaks the 1987 eight-stage tradition.

What Makes Dual Override Different

⚑

The Override System

Bypass your own limiters for power beyond normal limits, then eat a timed vulnerability window while your gauges recharge. Timing is the whole skill.

Custom Chips

50+ equippable chips modify both heroes - rapid fire, barrier bubbles, hover, phase-through - bought with Screws earned by clearing areas.

Proto Man Playable

First time in mainline. A shield-first moveset with sideways air-dashes, overheatable Shield Actions, separate enemy placements and a separate ending.

Three Areas Per Stage

Every Robot Master stage splits into three areas - a mid-boss, an R Robot Master replica, and the new boss finale - with hidden Bolts in each section.

About Mega Man: Dual Override

Mega Man: Dual Override is the twelfth mainline entry in Capcom's original Mega Man series, and the first built around two playable Robot Hunters. It was announced on December 11, 2025 at The Game Awards, with the first gameplay trailer shown at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, 2026 and further reveals at Tokyo Game Show 2026.

The premise is simple: Dr. Light is away from the lab when robots at a Robot Exhibition go out of control, and Mega Man and Proto Man are the two sent in to restore order. The plot is deliberately a light framework - the mechanical systems, not the narrative, are where the game's identity lives.

What makes Dual Override notable is structural. It breaks the 1987 template in three separate ways at once: the Override system replaces time-limited specials with a stored-gauge overclock, the Custom Chip system layers a build-crafting layer on top of the classic Special Weapon loadout, and every stage is split into three areas with a mid-boss and a returning "R" Robot Master before the new boss. It is also the first mainline Mega Man with a fully playable Proto Man, and the first where either hero can be chosen for a complete playthrough with the same story but different dialogue and a different ending.

The Two Systems That Define the Game

Override

Override is the mechanic the title is named after: it lets a robot temporarily bypass its own limiters and operate past its normal limits. A gauge fills as you deal or take damage, and up to three gauges can be stored. Unlike Mega Man 11's Double Gear, Override does not drain on a timer - the meter falls as you attack, so it is a resource you spend rather than a state you race.

The payoff is that Special Weapons become free of Weapon Energy while Override is active. The cost is that switching weapons ends Override immediately, and the Final Charge Shot - the third charge tier - ends it too. When Override ends you enter an overheated state of roughly twenty seconds, during which Custom Actions are blocked and the gauge will not recharge. Every Override is therefore a decision about when to stop, not just when to start.

Custom Chips

Chips are the second new layer. There are 50 or more, and they modify both heroes rather than replacing Special Weapons. You earn Screws by completing areas and trade them in for chips. Three preset chip sets appeared in the demo - "Built for Survival" with Barrier and E-Tank, "Built for Fire Power" with auto-charge and Double Charge Shot, and "No Chip Support" for close-to-classic play, with the Rush summon itself implemented as a chip.

Chips fall into three functional groups. Support Chips carry four simultaneous passive and active modifiers. Custom Actions give four distinct bound abilities with cooldowns. Challenge Chips can be equipped during a clear for optional conditions. Chips from classic Robot Masters are modelled on their old Special Weapons, so veterans get to carry a piece of every series they remember.
